One of the most popular, well-known and most visited squares in Rome is undoubtedly the Popolo Square. It has centuries of history, symbolic buildings and legendary churches. If you go to Rome and want to know it in depth, you cannot leave the Popolo Square out of your itinerary.
This square is one of the most notorious in the Italian capital, however, its origins are a bit confusing. There is no consensus on the reasons for its foundation, but it is presumed that it was created to accompany a nearby chapel, and that its construction was financed by the people of Rome, hence its name.
Despite this, another theory states that, in reality, its name comes from its location. Since it is located at the foot of Mount Pincio, in an area of very low elevation that in Latin is known as populus, and in Spanish it means poplar. Likewise, this proposal on the origins of the square suggests that this peculiar place was chosen because there was the tomb of the emperor Nero.
Be that as it may, Popolo Square has become one of the most frequented public spaces in Rome, both by locals and tourists. Today, it is also considered one of the city’s must-sees.
The Popolo Square stands out for its oval shape, which differentiates it from many other European squares, which are usually square or rectangular. In the same way, in it we can find different monuments of great importance, such as the Puerta del Popolo and the Terraza del Pincio.
In addition, the Popolo Square has its own collection of statues, fountains and columns. While in the center of the square, a tall obelisk stands, which has been in place for a long time.
Beyond these special decorations, we cannot talk about the Popolo Square without mentioning its famous churches. These are the Church of Santa María in Montesanto and the Church of Santa María dei Miracoli, both have a very similar architectural design, which is why they are known as the twin churches.
These churches are also accompanied by another religious temple, the old Basilica of Santa María del Popolo, which was founded in 1250.
