Rome is full of ancient buildings that represent the incredible Roman Empire, some are extremely colorful and known to all visitors. While others, such as the Column of Trajan, are more discreet and reserved, but continue to be representative icons of the capital of Italy.
Before talking about the monuments that commemorate this emperor, let’s know who Trajan really was.This was a Roman leader, famous for his extensive military career, his urban works and his good relationship with the Senate. During the government of Trajan, Rome expanded its borders to Romania, in an expedition led by the emperor himself.
However, that was not his only military victory, as Trajan also conquered territories in the Middle East, and his armies reached Syria, Jordan, Israel and even Saudi Arabia.
Although he was a successful conqueror, Trajan concentrated much of his political power on making improvements to the urban planning of Rome and the provinces of the empire. Under his administration, different buildings and monuments were created, among which the Port of Trajan, the Trajan’s Market and, of course, the Trajan’s Column stand out.
As its name implies, this is a tall column, located in the center of the ancient Trajan Forum. In total, it is 38 meters high, and its entire length is covered by different illustrations carved in the marble of the column.
These sketches tell the story of Trajan’s military campaigns, especially those in Romania. These drawings also have symbolic representations, which may be related to different gods from Roman mythology and different European rivers.
Incredibly, the stories told in Trajan’s Column resemble a newspaper chronicle, making it very easy to read and interpret.
Other characteristics of this monument are its inscriptions, which are also dedicated to Trajan’s victories. In addition, the column has a sculptural ornament on its top, originally designed to make it more colorful and attractive.
During the years of the Roman Empire, Trajan’s Column was crowned by a statue of an eagle, later it was replaced by one of Saint Peter. This last sculpture is the one that currently stands at the top of the column.
