The palaces, parks and theaters are part of the typical Tallinn architecture, which has been revitalized in recent years. Among the most wonderful constructions that we can find in the Estonian capital, is the Kadriorg Palace, one of the most important in the entire country.
The origin of the Kadriorg Palace is closely related to the influence that the Russian Empire had in the different regions of the Baltic Sea, and especially in Estonia.
The forerunner of this fantastic castle was Emperor Peter the Great, who after his victory in the Northern War, wanted to have a summer residence in Tallinn. To achieve this, he bought a huge house located on the outskirts of the city, and began a major reform and remodeling program to make this a true palace.
Similarly, the Tsar wanted his wife, Catherine I, to enjoy this new home, and he visited the Kadriorg Palace with her on several occasions.
However, interest in this residence soon waned, and by the end of the 19th century it was already in a state of abandonment. Luckily, the Estonian administration acquired the place, and it restored much of its former glory.
Today, the Kadriorg Palace is a building open to the public, as well as being one of the most popular and well-known tourist spots in Tallinn. The current structure of the castle is made up of the main building, the gardens and the nearby residences.
Similarly, the Kadriorg Palace has been home to different museums, of which the Estonian Art Museum, the Museum of Foreign Art and the KUMU Museum stand out.
In addition, one of the most important attractions of this castle are its beautiful gardens. These can also be visited, and are an oasis of rest, tranquility and relaxation. In the same green spaces, we can see a great variety of flowers, trees, ponds, fountains and trails.
But that’s not all, if we move a bit away from the main house, we will find a small residence, which served as the country house of Peter the Great while the Kadriorg Palace was still under construction. This house is perfectly preserved, and its interior is still adorned with the typical decoration of the time.
Other nearby landmarks include the Lauluväljak Amphitheater, home to many of the most notorious and popular festivals in the Estonian capital.
If you are a lover of Baroque architecture and want to learn more about the legacy left by the Russian Empire in Estonia, then do not hesitate to add the Kadriorg Palace to your travel plan.
This is a charming place, full of treasures and secrets to discover. Its location, away from the center but not outside the city, make this the ideal place to visit if you want to get away from the urban hustle and bustle.
Think no more! Come visit the Kadriorg Palace and enjoy its art galleries, its extensive gardens, its exquisite decoration and its spectacular cultural heritage.
