The city of Tellin is known for being a center of entrepreneurship and innovation. But nowhere is this noticeable as much as in the Kalamaja neighborhood, where modernity is lived in every corner and at every moment. Do you want to discover more about this fantastic neighborhood? Come with us!
Like many other areas of Tallinn, Kalamaja is quite old. It is known that as early as the 13th century this place existed, and as it was so close to the bay, it was inhabited mainly by fishermen and merchants.
As the centuries passed, the Kalamaja neighborhood grew, and at the end of the Middle Ages it was the largest in the entire city. Not only fishermen lived there, but also jewelers, clothing sellers, carpenters, blacksmiths and many other people who were dedicated to the sale of goods and services.
This great commercial exchange made Kalamaja a luxurious neighborhood, where it was frequent to see wealthy families and other important people. However, this changed over time, and in the mid-20th century, the Kalamaja neighborhood was a very depressed area, where abandoned buildings abounded and did not reflect its former splendor at all.
Fortunately, Kalamaja has been able to overcome adversity, and today it is the most famous neighborhood in Tallinn, which with its bohemian, artistic and renewal air fascinates both locals and visitors.
Kalamaja is known for its restaurants, breweries, bakeries, bars and cafes, these are very frequented by the inhabitants of the city, unlike those located in the center of Tallinn, which are usually purely tourist places.
In the same way, the Kalamaja neighborhood has a peculiar appearance, since it has a wide variety of buildings that, at first glance, seem to be uninhabited.
Incredibly, the interior of these buildings contrasts with their exterior, since many of the most frequented gastronomic and commercial places in the area are located inside these old structures.
In addition to restaurants and other food venues, Kalamaja is home to some of Tallinn’s most notorious monuments, parks and museums. Among them are the famous Patarei Jail, Balti Jaam Turg Market, Lannusadam Maritime Museum, Kalma Saun Sauna and Balti Jaam Train Station.
Undoubtedly, the popularity of the Kalamaja Quarter as a tourist destination has increased in recent years, but this is still a very Estonian area, where locals can go for a walk, have fun, meet friends, eat something and have a good time.
So if you want to live an authentic experience that helps you connect with the daily life of the inhabitants of this incomparable city, then you have to leave time in your travel schedule to go to visit the Kalamaja neighborhood.
In the same way, this neighborhood is most iconic, since it represents the great leap that Estonia took when it went from being a country oppressed by Soviet policies, to becoming one of the nations with the best quality of life in Europe.
And you, are you going to Tallinn? See you in the Kalamaja neighborhood!
