Venice Carnival, a recommended experience.

The Venice Carnival is a great festival that is held annually in this Italian city. The festival lasts for two weeks, and includes parades, concerts, markets and, of course, the famous Venetian masks.

During this period, the whole city is in a good mood and celebrates each day as if it were the last.

Characteristics of the Venice Carnival

When you are in Venice during Carnival, you will see people in costume everywhere. Most of the costumes are traditionally Venetian, as they feature the typical masks and their striking dresses.

However, many people use the Venice Carnival as an opportunity to dress up in extravagant and colorful outfits, which are not necessarily related to the theme of the festival.

Meanwhile, other people just wear ordinary clothes, only adding to the use of the mask.

On the other hand, the Venice Carnival is supposed to be a fun experience, so if you dare to get to know it, you should wear what makes you feel most comfortable

However, we suggest you at least wear a mask, to fit perfectly with the holiday and feel that you are part of its celebrations.

Origins of the Venetian carnival

The origins of the Venice Carnival lie in two ancient traditions: the Latin Saturnalia and the Greek Dionysian cults, religious festivals of great importance in their time that involved the use of masks and symbolic representations.

In this way, the history and meanings of the Venetian carnival are inspired by these traditions, reformulating them for their own purposes.

On the Saturnalia of ancient Rome, the social order collapsed, and slaves, along with free citizens, went to the city to celebrate with music and dance.

For its part, in the Greek Dionysian processions and works it was intended to unite the human being with nature in a superior harmony, free from the social conventions established by man.

What can you do during this celebration

During carnival, the city of Venice relaxes its traditional customs, and you can take advantage of the moment to experience the place in a different way.

For example, the famous Venetian rowers, known as gondoliers, go so far as to offer classes to visitors on how to drive a gondola, something that does not happen during the rest of the year.

In addition, the simple fact of wearing a mask is an act of rebellion, because for a long time the famous Venetian masks were only used by thieves, criminals and people who had to hide their identity.

Likewise, it was only during the carnival that the entire population of Venice could gather in the squares and streets, without suspecting those around them.

Without a doubt, any traveler can go to Venice at another time of year and have a great time. But, imagine dressing however you want without fear of making a fool of yourself, learning to drive a gondola with a professional gondolier as a teacher, and reliving one of the most questionable acts an ancient Venetian could do, wearing a colorful mask.

The experience is totally worth it. Of course, all of this happens as you pass crowds from all over the world around you, enjoying the music, dancing, food, and fabulous parties that the Venice Carnival has to offer.

If you haven’t made up your mind, what are you waiting for? The Carnival holds wonderful surprises for all its visitors.
