Austria is a fascinating country, full of history, culture and art, as well as a diverse architectural heritage. Among the most famous buildings in this European nation, is the Belvedere Palace. This idyllic castle is one of the must-sees of Vienna, so if you are in the Austrian capital, do not hesitate to visit it.
The history of the Belvedere Palace begins with the successful career of a young military man, who was known as Eugene of Savoy. This was a French nobleman, who had been raised alongside the most powerful personalities of the Gallic monarchy.
Despite this, Eugene of Savoy did not feel satisfied with the future religious career that had been assigned to him by the French court. Instead, he preferred a military life, which he achieved when he offered his services as a general to the Holy Roman Empire.
The martial career of Eugene of Savoy was more than successful, today he is remembered for being one of the most brilliant Austrian strategists and for his impeccable battle tactics. Likewise, Eugene of Savoy was responsible for creating one of the most emblematic Viennese castles, the Belvedere Palace.
This huge residence began to be built in 1714, the project took several years to complete, since it was necessary to carry out not only great construction efforts, but also landscaping and urbanization.
As its name implies, the Belvedere Palace is a grand, luxurious structure of extensive cultural value. This is made up of three palaces, which are linked by the large and beautiful gardens that surround the complex.
Similarly, the Belvedere Palace is considered one of the greatest examples of Baroque architecture in all of Austria. Within its different buildings we can find an immense collection of art, both sculptural and pictorial.
For this reason, the Belvedere Palace was selected to host three different museums, which are the Museum of Austrian Medieval Art, the Gallery of Austrian Art and the Museum of Austrian Baroque Art.
Previously, this majestic castle stood out for its exuberance. The grand halls, immense entrance frames, wide windows, long corridors, delicate ornaments, ostentatious details, gleaming chandeliers and displays of Baroque art made the Belvedere Palace a true Viennese treasure.
Today, the former palace of Eugene of Savoy is still impressive, but its main function is to be an exhibition site.
Being home to several museums, this castle is open to the public on a regular basis. Before going, it is possible to check the palace hours, so that visitors can plan their visit properly.
In the same way, to enter you have to buy a ticket, those under 18 can access for free.
As for transport, the Belvedere Palace is a bit far from the city center of Vienna, but it can be reached by tram, as there is a direct line that connects with the surroundings of this legendary Austrian castle.
