The Estación de Francia is a historical and cultural emblem of the city of Barcelona. For many years it connected the Catalan capital with the French border and with other cities in the region. It is a modernist icon, which today continues to be an important part of Barcelona’s identity.
The work of designing such an important architectural work was assigned to the architects Raimundo Durán and Pedro Muguruza. The work was completed just in time for the International Exhibition, and was inaugurated in 1929.
For much of the 20th century, it was the main railway station in all of Barcelona, and one of the most important in Spain. The Estación de Francia connected the Catalan capital with cities such as Valencia and Alicante, as well as being a direct line with the border between Spain and France.
For Catalonia, the Estación de Francia is a main traffic artery for personnel, since it is the station that connects numerous Catalan cities and towns with Barcelona. In a typical year, the Estacion de Francia can mobilize over 800,000 people.
The Estación de Francia is not only crucial for the mobilization of people throughout Catalonia, but it is also a cultural treasure and an artistic gem. There is no other station in Barcelona that has the same modernist style, or that has provided a continuous service for so long.
Today the Estación de Francia fulfills the functions of a cultural center and a railway station. The space available at the station is very wide, so it can easily host conventions, art exhibitions, concerts, meetings and other activities of cultural and commercial interest.
The modernist architectural style of the Estación de Francia is very special and important, which is why it has been preserved in the best possible way. It has undergone renovations, to expand and secure the structure, but the original design remains largely intact.
The Estación de Francia is a true symbol of Barcelona, which is why it is quite appreciated by the locals, and a place of tourist interest for visitors.
This station is located near the Plaza de la Ciudadela, and is connected by a bus line with the rest of the city.
The Estación de Francia is a place that deserves to be visited, even if you are not going to travel on any of its trains. The station decorations are made of glass and marble, in addition to having details forged with bronze.
For these reasons, visiting the Estación de Francia is almost like visiting a museum dedicated to modernist architecture and the railway history of the Catalan capital. Without a doubt, it is an experience that you cannot miss.
This place is very close to the famous Ciutadella Park, ideal to complete the route.
