The London landscape is full of iconic buildings, castles, towers, bridges and palaces, but among all of them, there is one attraction that stands out for its peculiarity. It is the London Eye, the official name of the most recognizable Ferris wheel in all of England. Do you want to know a little more about her? Here you will find out!
The Thames is the river that runs through London, and on its banks we can find all kinds of famous buildings and popular places. One of them is the London Eye, a large Ferris wheel, which together with the Big Ben Clock and Tower Bridge, is one of the most iconic elements of the English capital.
This Ferris wheel is one of the largest in the world, measuring about 135 meters high and 120 meters in diameter. The current London Eye, replaced its old version, which had been standing since the early years of the 20th century.
London’s first great Ferris wheel, called the Great Wheel, was designed and built to appear in a major exhibition of the time. This original Ferris wheel was well received by the public, and although it had to close shortly after it was inaugurated, it was used as inspiration for the creation of the London Eye.
The London Eye began operating on a regular basis in March 2000. The owners of the Ferris wheel had planned that it would be a temporary attraction, and that it would be dismantled after 5 years in use.
However, the success of the London Eye was enormous, so the necessary permits were issued to make it permanent. Since then, the London Eye welcomes thousands of tourists every year, from all over the world.
Most of the visitors go with the aim of getting on the Ferris wheel and taking a ride, but one of the things that tourists love is the view of the city. This is because, from the highest part of the Ferris wheel, you can see almost all of London.
In addition, it is common for the London Eye to be filled with lights at dusk, making the walk an unforgettable experience.
The capsules that transport the passengers are very safe, spacious and comfortable. Likewise, they are covered with glass, so that visitors can have access to the best and most exciting viewpoint of the city.
Being in London, of course you want to get on the famous London Eye. This attraction is open almost every day of the year, and to enter you have to buy an entrance ticket.
Keep in mind that this London Ferris wheel is very popular, and that you will probably have to queue to be able to take a ride on it. If you want to avoid the many groups of people, you can go during January or February, months corresponding to the low season.
Be that as it may, and no matter when you decide to go to London, the London Eye will be waiting for you, to give you a tour that you will never forget. So if you are excited by heights, and you want to see the English capital seen from above, it is time to start planning your visit to the London Eye.
