Museums protect cultural treasures of great importance, and Europe has some of the most famous exhibitions. However, the British Museum is unique, its various collections of art, antiques and books attract thousands of visitors each year. If you are on a walk in London, dare to discover this great museum.
The history of the British Museum began in 1753, when the English State received a donation of 80,000 historical pieces, most of them books, from the private collection of naturalist Hans Loane.
Loane wanted her prized collection to be properly preserved, and also available to British citizens. To fulfill this wish, the British administration designated a special place where all the pieces donated by Sloane, would be exhibited publicly.
Over the years, the British Museum’s collection grew, reaching an incredible 50,000 works on display. In addition, the museum’s facilities house millions of other objects, which are there for study or preservation.
Today, the British Museum receives a total of 5,828,552 visitors annually, making it the busiest museum in all of Britain. Its most famous exhibition is the section dedicated to Ancient Egypt, which presents objects of incalculable historical and cultural value.
Going to the British Museum is a fascinating experience, especially if you are a lover of history, art and literature. In it you will find extensive galleries dedicated to Roman, Etruscan, Middle Eastern and American cultures.
The British Museum’s collection is so large that it had to be divided into 10 separate departments, each with its own central theme.
These departments correspond to the sections of Coins and Medals, Prehistoric Antiquities and Roman Britain, Indigenous Ethnography, Greek and Roman Antiquities, Oriental Pieces, Asian Antiquities, Middle Ages and Renaissance, Engravings and Drawings, and of course, Egyptian Antiquities .
In addition, the British Museum is home to a magnificent library, known as the Reading Room, where books are available to all visitors.
However, it is important to note that although the pieces in the British Museum are very diverse, not all of them are on display. This is due to the lack of space in the museum rooms, which is why some collections are movable, presenting different objects in different periods of time.
If you don’t want to leave London without visiting this wonderful museum, you should know a few things before planning your visit. First of all, you will not have to buy a ticket, since being a public building, access is free. Your visit can be free or guided, but either way, you will love it.
Despite this, if there is any special exhibition, the entrance to it could be paid. Likewise, the general rules of any museum must be followed, which includes not touching, moving or lifting the pieces of the collections. Similarly, flash photography is prohibited.
Due to its great cultural and tourist importance, the British Museum is open almost every day of the year, with the exception of January 1 and Christmas.
