On the outskirts of the Catalan capital, we find a mountain, this is the Sierra de Collserola, and there is located Tibidabo, the highest mountain in the entire city. In addition, this is one of the urban parks most frequented by locals, and also an excellent viewpoint, so its popularity among international tourists does not stop growing. Do you want to know Tibidabo? Come with us!
Mount Tibidabo has been present throughout Barcelona’s history, however, it was never a crowded or visited space. In earlier times, it was known as Cerro del Águila, since it stood out for being the highest natural formation in Barcelona.
Despite this, the name of this hill varied over time, until it began to be called Tibidabo, a name that is still used today. This nickname is peculiar, since it does not resemble any other Spanish or Catalan word.
Similarly, it is not known when the hill changed its name, but it is believed that this curious pseudonym is related to a biblical scene, where Jesus is tempted by the devil, who offers him all the kingdoms of the world from the top of a great hill.
This legend has become popular among the people of Barcelona, and it even appears in the stained glass windows of the Temple of the Sacred Heart, which is located on one of the slopes of Tibidabo.
Although the myths that camouflage the origin of Tibidabo are interesting, they can also be a bit scary. Luckily, this hill has many other attractions, which make it the ideal place to go for a walk, exercise, relax and enjoy some time outdoors.
Among the most visited areas of Tibidabo, is its amusement park. This recreation area opened its doors in 1899, making it the oldest amusement fair in Spain.
If you want to visit it, then you are in luck, because the park continues to serve the public, and some of its attractions are still the original ones. Without a doubt, taking this tour is taking a walk through time.
Another place that you cannot leave out while you are in Tibidabo, is the Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which is also one of the best-known churches in Barcelona. In the same way, near it you will find a tiny hermitage, which was built in the middle of the 19th century.
Likewise, it is impossible to climb to the top of Tibidabo and remain indifferent to its magnificent views.
If you are one of those who are looking for the best point to see the Barcelona skyline, here you will have found the ideal option.
This hill, like the Sierra de Collserola, is located northwest of Barcelona. If you are passing through the Catalan capital and want to discover its most famous peak, you can use public transport.
The Tibibús is a bus that leaves from Plaça Catalunya and arrives at Tibidabo without making intermediate stops. The Tourist Bus also stops at the Tibibús terminal.
Finally, remember that Tibidabo is an urban park, so you can go up on foot or by bike. However, the easiest and fastest way to reach the top is by means of its funicular.
