The capital of Greece, Athens, is one of the best known cities in the world. Everything has happened in it, and in its streets you can see the passing of all its centuries. One of the most iconic and important places for Athenians is Syntagma Square, the current center of political power and social life.
The origins of the most important square in Athens were a bit convulsive, since in its beginnings, it was part of the Royal Palace, and later it became a symbol of Greek democracy.
This happened when, in 1843, the then King Otto I, was forced to accept a new constitution that recognized Greece as a completely independent country. Over the years, the Greek monarchy was deposed, and the old Palace Square became Parliament Square, better known as Syntagma Square.
Being a popular and central place, this square is usually the scene of social gatherings, demonstrations, festivities and celebrations. In addition, it is a fairly busy tourist spot, since most visitors who go to Athens pass through there at some point during their stay.
Many central squares are important for their great commercial and people influx, however, Syntagma Square represents much more. In it you can see a large part of the Greek historical legacy, as well as different national symbols that represent the long history of this European capital.
One such symbol is that of the traditional soldiers guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. These soldiers, belonging to the National Guard and known as Evzones, wear traditional costumes and their changing of the guard is an attraction in its own right.
In the same way, in Syntagma Square we can find commemorations to the Greek military victories. These are represented by bronze shields, distributed in different parts of the square.
But despite this, the greatest icon of Syntagma Square is the Greek Parliament Building, which can be seen at the end of the place, just behind the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Likewise, and beyond all its political and historical importance, Syntagma Square is very lively, and is always full of social, tourist and commercial activity.
