Near the banks of the river arno, there is an imposing construction that dominates the horizon. It is the Pitti Palace, a beautiful Renaissance-style castle that, for centuries, has been part of the identity of the city. Do you want to know more about this iconic place? We invite you to discover it!
The Vecchio Bridge, which rises over the narrowest part of the Arno River, was a place of great importance to the Florentines since it was first built by Roman troops. Historically, many of the richest and most powerful families in the city have settled in its vicinity.
It is impossible to speak of Florentine dynasties without naming the famous Medici family, which for centuries was one of the most important in all of Europe.
The palace became the possession of the Medici when the wife of the Grand Count of Florence, Eleanor de Toledo, bought the property from an important local banker named Luca Pitti. From that moment on, the Pitti Palace became the main residence and government center of the Florentine dukes.
Over the years, the Pitti Palace served as a military barracks, kings’ house, art museum and, finally, as a major tourist attraction.
Before it became one of the most visited places in Tuscany, the Pitti Palace was a private property, which could only be entered by the owners and their guests. However, this changed when the King of Italy, Victor Emmanuel III, donated the palace and everything in it to the Italian people.
Since then, the place has been transformed into a popular art museum, with exquisitely decorated interiors packed with invaluable works. As is to be expected, the Pitti Palace has been remodeled several times throughout its long history, despite this, it still retains some completely original decorations.
Regarding its architecture, this castle is spacious, has three floors, 7 galleries of exhibition, it is of defined edges and of severe appearance. Its exterior facade is not as ornate as the interior, and its cobblestones stand out, which in the sun looks golden and in the shade of sandy color.
In addition, its beautiful fountains and gardens also stand out, welcoming all tourists eager to discover this wonderful Florentine palace.
If you want to get to the Pitti Palace, you can do it by one of the city’s bus routes that pass near the area. Also, since it is a central place, it is possible to get there on foot.
Being the largest museum in Florence and exhibiting works of art made by artists such as Raffaello Sanzio, Ciro Ferri, Sandro Botticelli, Fra Bartolomeo and Pietro Da Cartona, the entrance to the Petti Palace is not free.
If you want to avoid the lines to enter the castle, you can reserve your ticket in advance, and if you want, sign up for a guided tour that will take you through all the corners of the building. But what is completely true is that you cannot leave Florence without having visited the great Pitti Palace.
