Milà House is one of the most famous in Barcelona, the work of the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. It is one of the most visited places in all of Catalonia, and it is among the most important modernist monuments in Spain.
Like many other houses of wealthy families from the early 20th century, Casa Milà was made to order. The owners and main financiers of the construction were Pedro Milà and Roser Segimon, a wealthy couple who wanted to have an exclusive place of residence.
The person in charge of designing the Milà House was Antoni Gaudí, who used a clear naturalistic style in the creation of the property. Construction began in 1906, and was inaugurated in 1912.
It was privately owned until 1987, the year it first opened its doors to the public. Similar to other constructions of the time, Milà House had to undergo some renovations before it could be a public monument.
The building has gained considerable fame since 1987, it has received millions of tourists interested in seeing and touring in person a naturalistic structure created by Gaudí. Currently, it is among the top ten most visited monuments in all of Spain.
Gaudí has many other creations in Barcelona, such as Parc Güell, among others.
Milà House is a large residential building, its flowing lines give it a much more artistic look than the adjacent buildings have. You have three different facades and their interiors have a more functional than artistic distribution.
The building has a total of six floors, plus the roof and the basement. You have numerous windows that allow sunlight to enter the interior of the enclosure, and precise wrought iron balconies.
Its most notable elements are the white color of its facades, the curvature of its lines and exterior walls, and the large sculptures on its roof, which decorate the upper domes that are also found on it.
All flats are open and available to the public, unless a renovation is underway. The interior spaces keep some original pieces of furniture, and some replicas or additions that complement the elements of the time.
The design of the interior spaces is so wonderful that it seems to be part of a naturalistic architectural fantasy. Almost no line is curved, not even the one on the stairs or the doors. Within the structure there are several open spaces with patios and gardens, so almost no part of Milà House is completely closed.
Milà House is one of the great must-sees in Barcelona. It is a tourist attraction of great international importance, and is visited by millions of people every year. With each tourist season, the demand for this work by Gaudí grows considerably.
So if you are in Barcelona and you plan to go to Casa Milà, you must be prepared to face a large number of people, even during the low season.
However, the wait will be worth it when you can walk through the precise and intricate corridors of Milà House, to end your day enjoying a great view of the city from one of its magnificent balconies or from its amazing roof terrace.
Nearby you have other attractions to visit such as Batlló House or Ametller House, among others.
