Park Güell is one of the great works of Antoni Gaudí, this wonderful union of forms, structures and figures is part of Barcelona’s urban planning and makes the Catalan capital stand out from other Spanish cities.
It is one of the best known public parks in all of Barcelona, it is the creation of Antoni Gaudí and its construction was financed by the businessman Eusebio Güell. Officially, it was inaugurated in 1926. Currently, it is an emblematic work of Catalonia and all of Spain.
The park is extensive, covering a total of 17.18 hectares. It has shops, children’s play areas, picnic areas, skating rinks, various pavilions, extensive gardens, striking bridges, incredible mosaics, some bars, areas for dogs and a great diversity of flowers and plants.
Park Güell was built in a deforested area, so the choice of the type of flora that would grow in the park depended on Gaudí and his collaborators. Likewise, Parc Güel marked the height of Gaudí’s naturalistic period, since the entire structure of the place was inspired by the curved and soft forms of nature.
In order to carry out the construction of Park Güell, Gaudí carried out an extensive study of its natural environment, its forms and its movement. The structure and design of the park is full of deep political and religious symbolism.
Due to its curious shape, Park Güell has a mysterious and even magical aura. Its composition is peculiar, and very few parks in the world resemble it in any way. As it is an exclusive work of Gaudí, the park is classified as a Site of Cultural Interest and as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Despite this, it is a popular recreation spot, widely visited by locals and visitors. Its central point is a large square that houses the Casa Gaudí Museum, a place where various works of the Catalan architect are exhibited and which was also his residence for more than a decade.
The park, being located in an area of mountainous relief, boasts one of the best views of the entire city. At the highest peak of Park Güell is the El Calvario Monument, which Gaudí considered one of the best geographical points in the park.
Colorful, spacious, unique, different and as magnificent as it is interesting, all are adjectives that perfectly define Park Güell, a space that makes Barcelona a completely unique city.
Due to its artistic, architectural and historical relevance, Park Güell is one of the most popular tourist spots in the Catalan capital. So it is advisable to visit the visit in advance.
The best time of year to visit Park Güell is during the low season, when the number of people has decreased considerably and the queues to enter the park are not so long. The months of November and December are the most recommended for those who wish to avoid the high season.
Likewise, if you visit Park Güell you can take advantage of the tour and visit nearby places of interest, such as Casa Milá, Hospital de Sant Pau, the Egyptian Museum or the Sagrada Familia.
