Do you want to discover a hidden secret in the Slovak capital? It’s time to get going and visit the Blue Church of Bratislava. This is one of the great architectural treasures of the city, as well as one of the most incredible modernist structures in Europe. Go! You’ll love meeting her.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Austro-Hungarian Empire dominated much of Central and Eastern Europe, including present-day Slovakia. For this reason, many Hungarian engineers and architects traveled to other parts of the region, to realize their ideas.
This was the case for Ödön Lechner, an experienced architect from Hungary, who briefly settled in Slovakia. During his time in Bratislava, he planned and began the construction of what would be one of his last works, the Blue Church.
The project began in 1909, and the church opened its doors five years later, in 1913. When it was inaugurated, the temple was consecrated to Saint Elisabeth of Hungary, a devout Magyar Catholic, who was the daughter of a Hungarian king and dedicated her life to finance the construction of hospitals, care for the sick and help the poor.
Likewise, the Blue Church was designed to serve as a symbolic tomb of Saint Elizabeth, since her remains are not found there but it was named in her honor.
Although it does not usually appear in international travel guides, the Blue Church is one of the wonders of the Slovak capital. Similarly, it has several features that are absolutely charming.
The first is, as its name indicates, the bluish tone of its walls. This color is special, it is not a dark blue, but a pastel blue hue, which gives it a calm and serene air.
Similarly, its main tower can be easily seen on the horizon, standing out thanks to its lofty cross, which is also painted in the same soft blue colour. For its part, the interior of the church is also very welcoming. Here we find small stained glass windows and some religious-style works of art.
Like the rest of the temple, the Interior of the Blue Church has light blue tones, which are present in the dome, on the walls and on the wooden benches. The bluish color is mixed with a delicate yellow hue, making the Blue Church an extremely harmonious space, perfect for taking a break from the fast-paced life in the city.
To get to know the Blue Church, you will have to move a little away from the center of Bratislava, since it is located just outside the Old Town. Fortunately, the Slovak capital is small and can be explored on foot.
Access to the Blue Church is free, and it is open almost all year round. Keep in mind that this temple offers masses and celebrates different religious events, such as weddings and baptisms, so it is advisable to check its schedule before making a visit, so you will not have to worry about interrupting any ceremony.
