Home | Oslo | What you can't miss | Royal Palace
Every monument and building in Oslo leaves you in awe. And the Royal Palace is no exception. Come and see the residence of the Royal Family of Norway, a place as unique as it is surprising.
After becoming independent from Sweden in 1905, Norway became an institutional monarchy. Power was in the hands of King Harald V, of the House of Glücksburg.
In the 19th century, between 1823 and 1848, the Royal Palace was completed. The design of the palace was in charge of the architect Hans Linstow, and it was a project for Charles XIV. In fact, at the entrance of the palace is his equestrian statue.
Its plant has a semicircular shape, the central side is wider and contains a central body projecting on both sides. The building has three floors, a chapel and a ballroom. It also has a room called the “bird room”, due to the amount of bird paintings it has.
Although after the country’s independence it became the patrimony of the Norwegian Royal Household, it is currently used as a place of work and not a residence.
What is most surprising when visiting it is that you can get to the very door of the place. This is because the passage is not restricted, as a way to show the closeness between the people and the monarchy.
As for the interior, it has a strong neoclassical influence, and is decorated with paintings by renowned Norwegian artists. If you schedule a private visit, you too will be able to visit the corners of the palace; but keep in mind that it is possible only during the summer.
The Royal Palace is surrounded by an impressive forest, and located on top of a hill. From there, you can enjoy the great views of Karl Johans Street, the main one in the city.
In addition to visiting the palace, you can also stroll through the gardens that surround it. These are full of tall trees, large lawns and some water bodies. You can meet them and relax on one of its benches, while you contemplate the beautiful views.
The gardens were built in 1840, and are famous for their sculptures of important Norwegian historical figures, as well as their majestic grove of trees.
Anyone who visits it is amazed by the surroundings of the palace. The atmosphere that forms there on sunny days is ideal for exploring them.
Undoubtedly, one of the palace’s greatest attractions is the changing of the guard. Every day this spectacle worth seeing is given, where the guards who guard the building parade for forty minutes.
In the summer season, there is also a parade of the Royal Guard. On that occasion, the guards depart from Akershus Fortress, bound for the Royal Palace. A military band and a group of uniformed men on horseback are in charge of accompanying them.
So do not hesitate to contemplate this show offered by the Royal Palace. In addition, getting to the building is very simple, since it is located on the main avenue of the city. On your next trip to Oslo, don’t miss out on visiting the residence of the Royal Family.
