Most of Berlin‘s most important museums are located on Museum Island. This complex, declared a World Heritage Site, houses the most important archaeological and art collections.
The most imposing on the island, and the most visited in Berlin, is the Pergamon Museum. Inaugurated in 1930, this Babylonian-looking building houses an impressive collection of Antiquities, as well as the Museum of the Orient and the Museum of Islamic Art.
Upon entering the Pergamon Museum, the most striking feature is its altar, built more than 2,000 years ago to give thanks to the gods. Continuing the tour, the door of the Roman market of Miletus opens up.
In the following rooms, works from the ancient Near East are on display. It is a collection of thousands of objects from excavations in Babylon.
On the other hand, another of the most visited museums of the island is the New Museum of Berlin. This building was closed for 70 years, and since its opening it is one of the favorites to visit.
The Museo Nuevo has several exhibits. There you can find objects from Egypt, the Stone Age, and others from the Golden and Bronze Ages. Each of its rooms is different from the previous one and all of them have something special. Don’t miss it!
On the other hand, for fans of contemporary art, Berlin has several options to visit. Starting with the Hamburger Museum. No, it is not dedicated to hamburger! It is the name of the old train station that houses it.
Among the works exhibited there, the works of artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein or Joseph Beuys stand out. Most of these works correspond to the second half of the 20th century.
But Berlin’s art is not only to be found in museums. Also in sculptures and street graffiti. And one of the city’s most popular art galleries is the Berlinische Galerie.
The exhibitions of this gallery are focused on local art, so you can see pieces from Dadaism to works from the period of the division of the city.
Another gallery that will delight both art lovers and children is the Gemäldegaleria, whose main collections are dedicated to Italian and German painters of the 13th and 16th centuries.
Finally, for those who enjoy 19th century art, the Old National Gallery in Berlin is ideal. This building with the appearance of a Roman temple has many rooms where works of French impressionists are exhibited.
Located on the grounds of the former royal gardens, the Museum Island is easily accessible to all those who wish to visit it. Comprising five major museums, it is impossible to miss it!
This beautiful island is located next to the Cathedral, in the center of the city, so it can be reached by subway, train or bus. Don’t think twice and come and enjoy Berlin!
