What is the Brandenburg Gate?

Formerly, the walls that surrounded the cities were something common, these served to protect the inhabitants and keep out the invaders, as well as to mark the limits of a metropolis.

Berlin had its own walls, within which most of the daily activities took place. Despite this, the German capital was growing rapidly, and soon the safe space within the walls was no longer sufficient.

Therefore, a new area was started to be built, which was part of Berlin but was located beyond the walls. This project was the idea of the Prussian king, Francisco Guillermo, and thanks to him the current Brandenburg Gate was created.

This was built right where the old gate of the walls was, and in its beginnings, it was one of the largest and most imposing buildings in the entire city.

What is the Brandenburg Gate like?

Due to its appearance, the Brandenburg Gate can be mistaken for a triumphal arch, like the one in the city of Paris. Despite this, this Berlin symbol was not created to honor any national hero.

Nonetheless, the Brandenburg Gate is an amazing place. It stands out for its robust neoclassical pillars, which marked each of the entrances that led to Berlin.

Furthermore, the decorative details of this famous door are as delicate as they are magnificent. In its attic, located on top of its pillars, it is possible to observe a design in relief, which shows a scene between Hercules and Nike, characters from Greek mythology, where the goddess gives the warrior a trophy of victory.

Likewise, to speak of the Brandenburg Gate is to mention its impressive upper statue, which can be seen from afar and forms one of the most representative sculptural ensembles in Berlin. This shows the goddess Irene leading a chariot of steeds while holding a spear, and above it, a garland decorated with an iron cross and an eagle.
