History and design of the tower

This 31-meter-high white tower was built in the 15th century, so it is considered one of the oldest structures in the city. This tower was designed by architect Paskoje Miličević and was built to serve as the main entrance to the city.

The tower is made of white stone, with a square base supporting it. At the top is the mechanical clock, which was incorporated years later into the original structure. The tower structure includes a mechanical clock and two bronze statues, known as Maro and Baro, who are in charge of striking the bell every hour.

Over the years, the Clock Tower was damaged by several earthquakes, which caused it to gradually lean towards Stradun Street. To prevent further incidents, the tower was demolished and rebuilt in 1928, but the original statues of Zelenci were not returned to their place, but were replaced by replicas. Meanwhile, the original statues can be seen in the Museum of Cultural History of the Ducal Palace.

What Dubrovnik is like

The Bell Tower and the Guardia building

The bronze bell in the tower, which rings to mark the hours, is one of the main attractions. Cast in bronze in 1506 by master caster Ivan Rabljanin, the bell is located at the top of the tower and is operated by Maro and Baro.

Next to the Clock Tower is the Guardia building, a structure that has been well preserved since its construction in the 15th century. Formerly, this place housed the guard that was in charge of protecting the city.

However, it currently serves as a museum where a large collection of weapons and historical objects dating from the time it was used as a barracks is exhibited.

Places to visit in Dubrovnik

What to see in Luza Square

The Clock Tower is located in Luza Square, a place with a lot of history and several points of interest to visit. On the south side of the square is the 18th century Baroque church of St. Blaise, dedicated to the patron saint of Dubrovnik.

On the east side is the Sponza palace, a site dating from the 16th century that was used as a customs office and treasury. Nearby you can see the Orlando Column, with the bronze figure of this legendary character who represents justice and freedom.

In addition to the historical buildings, the square is an ideal place to enjoy a typical Dubrovnik meal, have a coffee or sit and enjoy the atmosphere of the old town of Dubrovnik.
