Why is it called Plaza del Cabildo?

The history of this small square began with that of a school located in the Old Quarter of Seville. This school had a lot, and it was very close to the Cathedral of the city.

However, the school stopped providing its services at the beginning of the 20th century, and the building where it was located was demolished. Despite this, the site of that school remained standing, and for some time it was just one more space in the Cathedral.

Over the years, this changed, and the Cabildo Square gained popularity among the inhabitants of Seville. This small lot acquired the nickname of Cabildo Square, since the school of which it was part was administered by the Cabildo of the Cathedral.

Today, Cabildo Square is a peaceful and quiet place, where to take refuge when the hustle and bustle of an active and cosmopolitan city becomes overwhelming.

What to see and do in the Cabildo Square?

One of the characteristics that make the Cabildo Square a unique area is that it does not have an oval, rectangular or square shape, as are most squares, but that it is semicircular.

Access to the place is also quite curious, since it does not have a direct entrance, and in order to get there you have to go through one of its three doors, which lead to different streets. The different areas where the doors to enter the Cabildo Square are located are Calle Erfe, Calle del Almirantazgo and Calle de la Constitución, the latter being the most used of all.

In the same way, within the square we can observe other peculiarities, the most evident is that it is a closed place, since the old wall of the school keeps it away from the streets and avenues.

In the same way, the Cabildo Square has its semicircular shape thanks to an old building, which forms one of the facades of the square and is supported on numerous arches and pillars. These bows are delicately embellished with shades of white, orange, yellow and gold.

Likewise, the center of the square is decorated by a fountain, while the balconies of the building, which has three floors, give the whole place a charming air.
