A walk through the heart of Milan

The Vittorio Emanuele II Gallery was built in 1877, by the architect and engineer Giuseppe Mengoni. Its name refers to one of the most important kings of Italian unification, as a way of remembering the end of a sad time and the beginning of the rise of Italian culture.

As for the design, it is formed by two perpendicular arches covered by an iron and glass vault that intersect creating an octagon, with a glass dome. This style was very popular in the 19th century, and served as an inspiration for other European galleries. In fact, thanks to this, the term ‘gallery’ was introduced to this type of venue.

Likewise, the beauty of the gallery is so great that details can be found wherever you look at it. Like its cross shape that unifies the two most famous squares in the city, Duomo and Scala.

On the other hand, the central vault ceiling has a mosaic representing the continents. While in the central octagon there is a mosaic with the Savoia family coat of arms, represented with the image of a bull.

The latter is accompanied by a popular tradition that says that if you make a complete turn on top of the image of the bull with your right foot and with your eyes closed, you will enjoy good fortune and you will be able to return to the city. If the ritual is completed on December 31 at midnight, the luck will last the whole year. Will you try?
