Denmark is a country full of fascinating places and a lot of curiosities, but the most outstanding peculiarity of all is, without a doubt, Christiania. This is a neighborhood of Copenhagen, which declared itself independent and which today is one of the most important tourist attractions in the city.
In Europe there are different territories that have been proclaimed independent of the countries in which they are located, one of the best known cases is that of Sealand, an old maritime platform that declared itself independent from the United Kingdom and that today claims to be a principality .
However, it is the free city of Christiania that really attracts attention, not only for its location, but also for its prosperity. In fact, the Christiania neighborhood is one of the most famous in the Danish capital, attracting millions of tourists every year.
The history of this free city began in 1971, when a group of parents decided to take over the facilities of a former military camp, so that their children could play there. Later, some of the families permanently moved to the area, and refused to leave when the local authorities ordered them to evacuate.
Later, this group of inhabitants declared that the place, which was renamed the Free City of Christiania, was an independent territory and that it did not have to be subject to Danish laws.
At first glance, Christiania appears to be a typical Copenhagen neighborhood, but the differences begin to show when you walk down its main street.
This Free City has its own museums, sculptures, recreation sites and even schools, but what most attracts tourists is the economic difference between this neighborhood and the rest of the Danish capital.
This is because being a free city, exempt from the vast majority of taxes that other Copenhagen residents have to pay, prices in Christiania are much lower and affordable for travelers’ budgets.
Currently, Christiania has its own shield, flag and is one of the areas where the sale of soft drugs is most common.
This neighborhood is one of the busiest in the city, and every year it receives millions of tourists. If you are passing through Copenhagen and do not want to miss the opportunity to get to know this curious free city, you will be delighted to know that it is possible to get there by public transport and that there is a metro station that is very close to the place.
Despite this, if you are going to meet Christiana, you have to be very respectful of the residents of the neighborhood, since many of them do not allow them to photograph their houses or any of their properties.
Similarly, care must be taken not to break Danish law, as even though this is a free city, the entire area is still patrolled by the Copenhagen police.
If you follow these simple recommendations, you can be sure that your trip to the colorful, liberal and extravagant neighborhood of Christiania will be an experience you will never forget.
