Copenhagen, the capital and most important city of the Kingdom of Denmark, is home to an enormous amount of cultural treasures, but they are not usually as well known as those found in Paris, Madrid or Rome. If you go for a walk in this fascinating Nordic metropolis, don’t forget to stop by the incomparable Royal Library.
The Scandinavian region, where countries like Sweden, Norway and Denmark are located, has been a relatively remote area from the rest of Europe for most of its history.
However, this has changed over time, and today the Nordic countries are tourist destinations of great international demand. One of the reasons why its popularity has grown so much is thanks to its inexhaustible cultural offer.
For example, in Copenhagen, you will find the largest library in the region, as well as one of the most notorious in the world. It is the Royal Library, which was inaugurated in 1648 by order of the king, Federico III.
Since then, the Royal Library has been in charge of collecting, storing and preserving all the pieces of Danish literature that have been written to date. Including volumes of scientific research, social theses and research journals.
The number of copies found in the Royal Library is extensive, but it is estimated that in total it has about 32 million books. Of course, this is too large a number to be accommodated in one building.
For this reason, the Royal Library of Denmark is divided into four locations, which are categorized according to the theme of their collection.
In the center of Copenhagen, we find the section specialized in Law and Social Sciences, while in other parts of the Danish capital there are the buildings that contain the volumes of Medicine and Natural Sciences, as well as those of Humanities.
Despite this, the most visited building in the Royal Library continues to be its main headquarters. In it are the most extensive and important collections, as well as a whole section dedicated to the history and folklore of Denmark.
Similarly, the library headquarters is an architectural gem, as there is no place like it anywhere else in the country. This seat is known as the Black Diamond, due to its rectangular shape and dark color, it is very close to the old main building of the Royal Library, which dates from 1906.
If you have already scheduled your trip to Copenhagen and are wondering what the must-sees of this European metropolis are, then you should add the Royal Library to your itinerary.
This is open to the public, and you can visit it every day of the year, except January 1 and holidays. When you are in the Royal Library, you can also tour its eight floors and marvel at the different works of art that adorn the place.
Likewise, different cultural events, exhibitions and concerts are usually held at the Black Diamond, so it is worth carefully scheduling your visit. If you want to learn more about the Royal Library, it offers guided tours, which take place every Saturday and cover both the ancient and modern headquarters.
