Copenhagen is not only a city of museums, gardens and theaters, it is also one of the most cosmopolitan metropolises in Europe, where entertainment seems to have no end. If you are one of those who like to explore the most vibrant areas of a city, then do not hesitate to visit the fantastic Nyhavn Canal.
Denmark is a country closely linked to the sea, in fact, most of its territory is made up of islands, and only a small part of it is linked to continental Europe.
This makes Copenhagen the perfect place to create ports and canals, which have been present throughout the city’s history. To take full advantage of this geographical position, King Cristián V ordered the creation of a large canal, which would allow the entry of more ships and the growth of the local economy.
In this way, the construction of the Nyhavn Canal began. When it was finished, it quickly became one of the main access routes to Copenhagen, as well as one of its liveliest areas.
Despite this, Nyhavn did not always have a good reputation among the citizens, as it was a place known for the illegal acts that were committed there. Fortunately, this perception changed over time, and today it is one of the areas most frequented by tourists and locals.
Along with Copenhagen’s famous Little Mermaid, the Nyhavn canal is one of the best-known postcards of the Danish capital. It stands out for its houses and small buildings, all painted in warm colors, as well as for the sailing boats that are usually near the port.
Likewise, on the Nyhavn Canal there are many of the most visited tourist places in the city, including restaurants, cafes, shops, hospitality sites, theaters, cinemas, among many other things.
If you are going to spend a couple of days in the Danish capital, don’t leave Nyhavn out of your itinerary. There is never a shortage of activities there, and you can do such fun things as take a boat ride through the canals, visit the iconic Little Mermaid statue, visit some of Scandinavia’s most famous breweries and appreciate what everyday life is like in this popular area of the city.
Also, in the streets of Nyhavn are located some of the most emblematic monuments of Denmark, such as the Anchor Memorial, which honors the 1,700 Danish soldiers who perished in the bombings that Copenhagen suffered during World War II.
The Nyhavn Canal, like all its streets and points of interest, are always open to the public. However, the best time of year to visit is during the summer, as the climate is much warmer and there is more commercial, tourist and cultural activity.
Similarly, going during the month of December is an excellent opportunity to see the Christmas decorations and traditional markets. Of course, do not forget that Danish winters can be very cold, and that you will need the right clothing to be able to walk through Nyhavn without complications caused by snow, wind or ice.
