Copenhagen is one of the most dynamic, vibrant, fun and diverse cities in Europe. In it it is possible to find from the most luxurious restaurants, to the most famous beers in the world. In addition, culture and art also have their place in the Danish capital, especially in the Glyptotek NY.
The origin of the NY Glyptotek is peculiar, since it is linked to the brewery entrepreneur, Carl Jacobsen, who had a large private collection of statues.
It is said that Jacobsen had more statues than plants in his garden, and that he needed a place where he could preserve these sculptural works. However, the businessman decided to turn his house into a museum open to the public, although the statues still belonged to his extensive private gallery.
Over the years, Jacobsen’s garden and house could no longer supply so many sculptures, so these were donated to the Danish State. From that moment on, the history of the NY Glyptotek would begin, whose official name is Ny Carlsberg.
Today, the museum building houses all the statues that belonged to Jacobsen, including those of French, Danish and Old Greco-Roman origin.
This museum is one of Copenhagen‘s must-sees, as its enormous diversity of sculptural pieces is unique in the whole country.
Likewise, the NY Glyptotek is divided into four sections. These are classified according to the origin and the artistic current to which the sculptures belong. The largest room is where the statues of Ancient Rome, Ancient Greece, the Near East and Ancient Egypt are located.
The other galleries correspond to Danish, French and European sculptures in general. It is important to note that in the NY Glyptotek there are not only statues, but an extensive range of paintings, portraits, engravings, sketches and drawings.
Among the artists whose works are in the place, we can mention Herman Bissen, Édouard Manet, Paul Gauguin, Edgar Degas, Antonio Canova, Pablo Picasso, John Flaxman, Christen Schiellerup Købke, Auguste Rodin, Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg and Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux .
Similarly, the NY Glyptotek exhibits one of the most famous statues in the world, The Thinker, made by the Frenchman Auguste Rodin.
In addition, one of the main attractions of the Glyptotek NY is its greenhouse, where there is an abundant variety of plants, including palm trees and different tropical flowers.
The NY Gallery opens its doors from Tuesday to Sunday, it is closed every Monday, as well as on holidays, Christmas and January 1. Visiting hours on Thursdays may be different from those of the rest of the week, if you plan to go that day, take this into account.
Similarly, to enjoy the facilities of the place, you have to buy a ticket, which can be purchased online or at the gallery’s ticket offices. Children and seniors enter free.
If you go on Tuesday, you can also enter for free, so that is the best time to go to see the Glyptoteca NY.
