Although the beautiful buildings and charming streets are part of the typical Copenhagen landscape, the churches in the Danish capital are rarely so famous. However, there is one that stands out thanks to its precious design and historical importance. It is about the Marble Church, and here we are going to discover it.
Amalienborg is one of the most important squares in Denmark, there is the Amalienborg Palace, which is the seat of the country’s political power and one of the residences of the Danish Royal Family.
This palace is not a single building, but it is a large architectural complex that completely surrounds the square where it is located.
Similarly, in Amalienborg we can find one of the great treasures of Copenhagen, the Marble Church. This church, as its name implies, is made almost entirely of marble, and is one of the closest constructions to Amalienborg Palace.
Because it is so close to one of the most visited places by tourists, and because it is one of the few local religious temples that stand out for their undeniable splendor. All this makes the Marble Church one of the must-sees for those who visit the wonderful city of Copenhagen.
Like many other Danish buildings, the Marble Church has a complicated past. Its construction began to be carried out by orders of the king, Federico V. This monarch financed the project throughout his reign, but once his son, Cristián VII, took power, the construction of this church stopped completely.
Despite this, many Danish architects wanted to continue with the project, but none had the necessary support. For more than a century, the Marble Church remained in a dilapidated state, and it was not an important place for the inhabitants of the city.
The Marble Church that we see today is the work of the architect Ferdinand Meldahl. Under Meldahl’s direction, the church would finally be finished, 150 years after its construction began.
Today, the Marble Church is one of the most beautiful in northern Europe. In addition to its marble finishes, it is famous for its immense dome, which is 50 meters high. Similarly, the interior spaces of the place are exquisitely decorated, while its exterior facade harmonizes perfectly with the appearance of Amalienborg Palace.
The church is open throughout the week, those who visit it can freely tour the building, except for the parts that are forbidden to the public. Also, you can climb to the top of the dome, and from there appreciate one of the most fascinating panoramic views of the Danish capital.
In the same way, the Marble Church is easily accessible, because it is located in one of the most central areas of the city. If you go by bus, be sure to take lines 1A or 26, which will drop you off near Amalienborg Square.
