Although Florence stands out for its centuries-old buildings, there are other places in the city that stand out for being more modern. One of them is the Republic Square, a space that completely changed the urbanism of the city, and gave the Florentines a new point of social, commercial and cultural interest.
The Republic Square, or at least the place it occupies in the Historic Center of Florence, is not a novelty. In fact, it has been there since before the Renaissance and even Medieval times began.
Like the Signoria Square, Republic Square was a market for many years. There were also small houses around it and the area was full of street stalls. Likewise, the Jewish Quarter of Florence was quite close to the place.
Much later, Florence was briefly named the capital of Italy, and plans to modernize it began. One of the approved ideas was to eliminate the old market and turn it into a plaza. However, when Rome was chosen as the definitive capital, many of the urban renewal plans were abandoned.
Only at the end of the 19th century, the Republic Square began to take shape again, and this time the change would be lasting. The square withstood the worst years of the Second World War, until it became a lively and active area, which every day is filled with people, both locals and visitors.
When you first arrive at the Republic Square, it is easy to notice its rectangular design, bordered by high walls, facades of buildings, the large door that also serves as the main entrance, the equestrian statue that adorns the center of the square and the large arches that form the first floor of the famous Pillar of Abundance.
As you might expect, the Republic Square is a widely traveled part of the city. It is where the old and modern areas of Florence meet, and it is also the ideal place to go for a walk, meet friends or simply marvel at its spectacular architecture.
Likewise, it continues to honor its historical past, since the old market is currently one of the most important commercial venues in Florence. Its surroundings abound with food stalls, clothing stores, cafes, and many other leisure and entertainment options.
Going to Florence and not knowing the Republic Square is like going to Rome and missing the opportunity to visit Navona Square, simply impossible.
In the same way, the square is a type of border that separates the new Florence from the old one, so if you want to go from one area to the other, you will undoubtedly have to pass through here.
Our advice is that you enjoy the way, stop to see the shops, sit down for a coffee, have a sandwich or take some pictures, since the scenery offered by this square is ideal.
Perhaps the Republic Square does not have the same works of art as the Signoria Square, but as soon as you know it, you will fall in love with it.
