The temple on the river

One of the most remarkable characteristics of the Church of St Micahel is its excellent location. It is located near the banks of the Elbe River, and can be seen from ports and downtown neighborhoods.

Similarly, the Church of St Michael shares several similarities with other classical structures in Hamburg, such as its roof covered with copper, which gives it a peculiar greenish color.

Also, this temple is one of the busiest Protestant churches in the region, and one of the largest in Germany.

How is the Church of St Michael

What is the Church of St Michael like?

At first glance, the Church of St Michael seems to be old, especially if you take into account its baroque style and its robust towers with a classic appearance. However, this is one of the newest religious temples in the metropolis, since it was inaugurated at the beginning of the 20th century.

Despite this, in the same place where the Church of St Michael stands today, there were two other cathedrals, bearing the same name as the current one. The first was built in the mid-17th century, but was destroyed by lightning. The second structure was the victim of a fire while it was still under construction.

The third church, which still stands today, opened its doors in 1912, and from then on it became an invaluable building for Hamburg. This popularity is not only due to its religious function, but in the Church of St Michael we find one of the most impressive watches in Europe. This one has a diameter of two meters, and its very long hands are covered in gold.

Similarly, the interior of the church has its own charm. On the main facade, welcoming visitors, is a statue of the Archangel Michael defeating the devil. Once inside, you will see the imposing white walls of the church, as well as its golden organ and its solemn altar.

While you’re at St. Michael’s Church, take the opportunity to climb up to its bell tower, and from there enjoy the best views of Hamburg. Also, if heights are not your thing, you can also go down to discover its mysterious crypts.
