The first was built in the mid-17th century, but was destroyed by lightning. The second structure was the victim of a fire while it was still under construction.
The third church, which still stands today, opened its doors in 1912, and from then on it became an invaluable building for Hamburg. This popularity is not only due to its religious function, but in the Church of St Michael we find one of the most impressive watches in Europe. This one has a diameter of two meters, and its very long hands are covered in gold.
Similarly, the interior of the church has its own charm. On the main facade, welcoming visitors, is a statue of the Archangel Michael defeating the devil. Once inside, you will see the imposing white walls of the church, as well as its golden organ and its solemn altar.
While you’re at St. Michael’s Church, take the opportunity to climb up to its bell tower, and from there enjoy the best views of Hamburg. Also, if heights are not your thing, you can also go down to discover its mysterious crypts.

To do the tour, depart from the center of Hamburg, take lines 36, 37 or 112 of the local bus system and these will leave you near the Church of St. Michael. If you wish, you can finish the journey on foot.
Another option is to get on the U3 train line, and stay at the Rödingsmarkt station, from where you will easily reach the church of St. Michael.
