Home | Oslo | What you can't miss in Oslo | Akershus Fortress
One of the most impressive monuments you will find in Norway is the Akershus Fortress. This medieval construction was the scene of numerous battles throughout its history. Today it is one of the main tourist attractions in Oslo. Come meet her!
The construction of the Akershus Fortress took place during the 14th century, and it served as a royal residence, a prison and a place of execution.
It is located near the City Hall, in the heart of Oslo. And its name comes from the old farm on which the castle was built, the Aker farm.
Throughout its history, the fortress had great strategic and symbolic value for Norway. Its proximity to the sea was very important, as naval power was essential in protecting Norwegian trade interests.
Did you know that it also functioned as a royal residence? This happened during the reign of Christian IV. However, the nineteenth century was the phase of decline of the fortress. At that time, new buildings were built for different purposes, both military and administrative or maintenance.
Today, Akershus Fortress is still a military area, but also an attractive tourist spot.
The main attraction of the Akershus Fortress is the castle. Its austere exterior does not have its original appearance, as it underwent various modifications in the 17th century, when it was given a Renaissance style.
However, the interior surprises with its perfectly preserved decoration. The castle consists of two inner courtyards surrounded by high walls and towers, while its Torre del Homenaje presides over the complex.
Official events are often held in the interior halls of the castle. During the tour you will be able to enter the huge rooms, where important political decisions used to be made.
There you will also find the dungeons, a place of confinement for local criminals. In addition, you will be able to enter the crypt, where some kings rest.
On the other hand, the Akershus Fortress has two museums. One is the Defense Museum, where you can see Norwegian military history from Viking times to the present day.
The other is the Resistance Museum, where you will learn about the history of the Resistance during the Nazi occupation of Norway.
Akershus Fortress is one of the main centers of interest in the city. And it can’t be out of your itinerary. Here, you will have the opportunity to visit each of the corners that this fantastic medieval castle presents.
In addition, you can learn about its history through guided tours. Knowing its museums will teach you more about the local army and the wars that Norway went through. But if you’re looking to relax in a little oasis, the fortress has beautiful gardens to walk around.
So if you find yourself wandering through the heart of Oslo, don’t hesitate to visit Akershus Fortress. Via the drawbridge across Kongens Gate, you will reach the Fortress Information Center, the Resistance Museum and Akershus Castle.
