At the end of the 19th century, Paris was one of the largest cities in Europe, and its old streets could not cope with the growing population. Therefore, the local administration designed innovative urban plans, to create new roads and make the French capital a more walkable place.
The Pont Alexandre III was part of this plan, but its design would also serve another purpose, since the Universal Exhibition of 1900 was approaching and Paris, the chosen venue, had to show its best face.
The metropolis had already impressed in other editions of this convention, especially with the newly built Eiffel Tower, so the Pont Alexandre III had to rise to the occasion.
Construction work began in 1896, with Emperor Nicholas II of Russia and his wife being the special guests, who added a solemn touch to the occasion. At the ringing of the bells that announced the arrival of the 20th century, the Pont Alexandre III was almost ready, being inaugurated on April 14, 1900.
This bridge is one of the maximum representatives of Art Nouveau, an architectural style that rescued the characteristics of neoclassicism and united them with other currents such as romanticism and Gothic.
Therefore, the Pont Alexandre III stands out for its incredible design, which stands out for the robustness of its pillars but also gives prominence to the details. In addition, right at the entrance and at the end of the bridge, there are two high bases, which serve as supports for the sculptures of gilded steeds that adorn the place.

It has been a source of inspiration for numerous writers such as Ernest Hemingway in his book Paris Was a Party, in the novel The Perfume by novelist Patrick Süskind or more recently in the contemporary novel The Map of Longings by Alice Kellen.
Well-known brands such as Chanel, Dior or Louis Vuitton show the Alexander III bridge in their advertising campaigns, as well as the magazines Vogue and Elle.
