A palace between two rivers

Slovakia is a country in Central Europe, and through its territory flow two of the most important rivers in the region, the Morava and the Danube. For centuries, these waterways were the biggest trading point for Slavic peoples, so many tried to dominate them.

Of course, the Slovaks also participated in this contest, and to ensure their dominance, they decided to create a fortress on the shores of Bratislava. This building would be known as Devín Castle, and it is located right at the confluence of the Morava River and the Danube.

This privileged position allowed the rulers of Bratislava to have enormous influence on river trade, and promoted the development of the city.

Currently, Devín Castle is believed to have been built in the 17th century, however, it is not known exactly in what year or how long it took to build it.

Why visit the Castle of Devín?

Slovakia is a beautiful nation, and if you are a lover of history, architecture and ancient medieval palaces, you cannot miss the opportunity to visit Devín Castle.

Keep in mind that, although much of the original fortress is preserved, many parts of the castle are in ruins. This destruction is not due to the passage of time, but to the fact that Napoleon Bonaparte’s army ordered its destruction, so its structure suffered great damage caused by Gallic artillery.

Despite this, Devín Castle remains an icon of Bratislava, as well as one of the most representative and valued national symbols of Slovakia. Therefore, there are many people who annually make a stop in this corner of Europe, and discover what this palace has to offer.

Once there, you can walk through its legendary courtyards, admire its imposing walls, walk through its narrow corridors and even climb one of its watchtowers, from where you will have an extraordinary view of the Danube and the Morava.
