Home | Frankfurt | What you can't miss | Skyline
For any lover of modern architecture, Frankfurt is the ideal destination. Nicknamed Mainhattan, this European metropolis seamlessly blends green spaces, modern designs and old buildings with its spectacular Skyline. Come meet him!
Frankfurt offers a wide cultural offer, especially due to its huge variety of museums. It is perfect to visit with children, as it has many playgrounds. And it can be traveled by public transport, because it works wonderfully.
But, without a doubt, contemplating its many buildings and getting the best views of the city is the best thing about knowing Frankfurt.
Precisely, the area of skyscrapers and offices that constitutes the financial business district, bears the name of Mainhattan. This nickname is a play on words. It refers to both the River Main and the famous New York borough, Manhattan.
In Mainhattan is the second tallest skyscraper in Europe, the Commerzbank Tower, 259 meters high. In turn, the Messeturm is the second tallest building in the city and the third tallest in Europe, at 257 meters.
Over the years, the skyscrapers of Frankfurt have evolved. And one of the ones you can visit is the Main Tower. At 200 meters high, it is the fourth tallest in the city.
From its vantage points you will have spectacular views, and you may even see the hills of Taunus, Odenwald and Spessart.
But if you prefer to admire the Frankfurt skyline from below, then you must stroll through Eiserner Steg. This pedestrian bridge was built in 1869, at the initiative of the citizens of Frankfurt, to connect the old town with the Sachsenhausen district.
The iron bridge is in the Neo-Gothic style, and since its construction it has undergone numerous changes and modifications, the last of which took place in 1993.
Currently, it is a very special tourist spot, due to the amount of locks with which lovers seal their love. In addition, it is one of the best places from where you can photograph the Frankfurt skyline.
Another bridge that crosses the river Main is the Flößer Brücke. From here you will be able to contemplate how the skyline of Frankfurt rises majestically and you will be able to obtain incredible photographs.
If you decide to take a break from gazing at the incredible buildings that surround you, visit the Skyline Plaza Shopping Center. This modern shopping complex is located in the Messe area, close to the city center.
One of its best attractions is the “Skyline Garden”, a wonderful outdoor terrace with stunning views. Here you will find a roof terrace with a network of trails to take a walk. In addition, the garden patios provide seating for lounging, reading a book or relaxing.
On the other hand, you can see the banks of the museums, to the right of the Eiserner Steg bridge. There are nine museums located in large and impressive houses, which date back to the 19th century.
Finally, another way to see the Frankfurt skyline, its bridges and neighborhoods far from the center, is by cruising the River Main. The boats leave from the port of Eiserner Steg, and it is an ideal plan to enjoy with the family.
