In the German capital it is possible to find magnificent architectural works, which stand out for their impressive design and incredible history. One of the highlights of Berlin Cathedral, which is one of the most important Protestant churches in the entire region, as well as a first-rate tourist attraction.
Currently, the most famous basilica among Berliners is the Berlin Dom, the official name of the Berlin Cathedral. In its beginnings, this was a baroque-style church, located very close to the Royal Palace.
This original construction was redesigned in 1822, being one of the most significant urban changes of the time. This remodeling work was carried out by the famous German architect, Karl Friedrich Schinkel, who gave the Cathedral a much more classic and simple look.
However, the simplicity of this building was not well received by several members of the Royal Family. For this reason, another reconstruction process was carried out, which aimed to give a more majestic and stately appearance to the Berlin Cathedral.
This new version of the church, in a neo-baroque style, was inaugurated at the beginning of the 20th century. Despite this, the serious warlike conflicts that Germany would experience during that period of time would greatly damage the structure of the temple.
Until a few decades ago, Germany was still reeling from the ravages of World War II and the division it caused in the country. Likewise, the Berlin Cathedral had to be rebuilt almost entirely.
Luckily, you can still see the spectacular Baroque design of the church, which stands out for its beautiful dome and its imposing towers. In the same way, the top of the Cathedral is crowned by a distinctive golden cross, which represents the end point of a very long reconstruction process.
In addition, this church differs from other Protestant seats thanks to its wonderful interior decoration. In it we can find golden details that fill the walls and ceilings with life, impressive frescoes that highlight the incomparable appearance of the dome and beautiful stained glass windows that make the Berlin Cathedral a temple as beautiful as it is imposing.
Likewise, the Berlin Cathedral stands out for its Main Altar, made entirely of marble, and for its organ, which can be heard in every corner of the church.
Of all the European capitals, Berlin stands out for being completely unique. This German metropolis had to rise from its ashes and recover its historical, architectural and cultural heritage.
That is why visiting the Berlin Cathedral is an experience that you should take advantage of, this place marked a before and after in the city, since it went from being the basilica to the monarchy to become one of the many symbols that identify the Berliners.
If you are planning your tour of the most important city in Germany, put the Berlin Cathedral on your must-see list. Do not forget that the place offers guided tours, which will take you to discover all the secrets of this formidable church.
