Berlin is known for its impressive museums and magnificent historical monuments, which chronicle the past and present of this fascinating European capital. One of its most popular galleries is the East Side Gallery, a huge open-air exhibition displaying incredible works of art. Do you dare to meet her? Join us!
Germany is one of the most prosperous countries in the region, however, this tranquility is recent. The 20th century was very complicated for this nation, as it had to go through conflicts as serious as the First and Second World Wars.
At the end of the last war, Germany was occupied and divided by the countries that won the conflict. The western part of the country was separated from the eastern part, and both parts were two different states for more than forty years.
This division was very noticeable in Berlin, the German capital, since here a great wall was built that separated the city and that, today, is part of the East Side Gallery.
This extensive wall was 3.6 meters high, covered a perimeter of 155 kilometers and marked the border between Western Europe and Eastern Europe. Each of these blocks had a different ideology, which was in total disagreement, so political problems between the two were common.
In Germany, this ideological rivalry ended on November 9, 1989, when the Berlin Wall was torn down and the country began a reunification process.
Although the last wall in Europe had ceased to exist, it still had an important place in the popular culture of the time, especially among those who defended peace over any type of ideology.
Likewise, the new freedom of Berlin inspired many artists from different parts of the world, who came to the German capital to paint on the remains of the wall that, for so many years, had separated the inhabitants of the same city.
Currently, the East Side Gallery exhibits 102 paintings, each one has its own style and stands out for its incredible variety of ideas, colors and designs. Despite this, almost all the works pay tribute to peace and freedom.
In addition, the East Side Gallery initiative gave a new purpose to a wall that terrified everyone who approached it, as it now displays so many messages of togetherness, tolerance, hope and forgiveness.
This museum, so named because the vast majority of the paintings are on the eastern side of the wall, is one of a kind and if you are passing through Berlin, feel free to add it to your must-see list.
In it you will not only find a wide variety of works of art, but you will also be able to see an extraordinary variety of artistic movements, including styles with a great historical trajectory, such as hyper-realism, surrealism, cubism, graffiti and expressionism.
Likewise, visiting the East Side Gallery will give you the opportunity to connect with Berlin’s recent past, which feels incredibly distant but can still be seen in the streets of this unmistakable, mysterious and peculiar city.
