Gendermenmarkt is closely related to Berlin’s history, its construction began when Berlin was still a small city, surrounded by walls and with few spaces dedicated to the recreation of its inhabitants.
During the medieval era, the area where the Gendermenrakt is currently located was a wasteland, which the men of the cavalry used as a barracks. They knew it as Gens d’Armes, and from there it derives its name.
Plans to create the modern Gendermenmarkt started in the mid-17th century, originally this was a marketplace and was not intended to become a plaza. However, King Frederick I of Prussia, decided to create a suburb in the surroundings of the place and grant them to the French Lutherans who were living in Berlin at that time, since France had very strict laws against Protestants.
In this way, a new neighborhood emerged, where the Germans and the French coexisted peacefully. In the middle of this neighborhood, was the Gendermenmarkt, which marked the union of the community as well as the future urban development of Berlin.
With the passing of time, the square was changing along with its surroundings. Residential areas gave way to large commercial spaces, where restaurants and hospitality services were common.
Similarly, near the Gendermenmarkt two of Berlin’s best known buildings were built, the Französischer Dom and the Deutscher Dom. These are two twin cathedrals, popularly called the French Church and the German Church.
