Slovakia is a small European country, full of charm and beauty. Bratislava, its capital, is a metropolis that maintains its historical style, while making way for modernity. Here we also find the mythical Bratislavsky Hra, one of the most famous palaces in the region and an essential stop for every traveler.
The area where Bratislava is today was, for many years, a simple settlement in the heart of Europe. This modest town did not stand out for being a great civilization, nor for its immense castles or large buildings.
However, this changed with the arrival of the 9th century. At that time, the Slavs were migrating from the east of the region, founding new cities along the way. When they reached the hill of Bratislava, they stayed there and started building a fortress to protect themselves from enemy invasions.
Over time, this fort became a palace, receiving the name of Bratislavsky Hrad. In addition, it fulfilled its defensive role, since the Slovaks were able to get rid of the Mongol and Ottoman troops, who had conquered several neighboring nations.
Likewise, the Bratislavsky Hrad was an important castle for European royalty, serving as the seat of the Hungarian royal court, as well as a secondary residence for the Austro-Hungarian emperors.
Although the history of Slovakia stands out for its many victories, the country has also gone through difficult times. One of the most complex times for the Slovaks was the start and end of World War II, as well as the subsequent dissolution of Czechoslovakia.

The main function of this fantastic castle is to be the home of the Slovak president, so some of its access is restricted. However, the Bratislavsky Hrad is still a space open to the public, and one of the favorite stops for tourists.
In this palace you can visit the exhibitions of the Slovak National Museum, walk through its corridors full of stories, pass through its legendary gates and tour the oldest tower of the castle, which has been standing since that remote time, when this building was a imposing defensive fort.
Lastly, keep in mind that the best time of the year to visit Bratislavsky Hrad is during the summer. The weather is warmer, the gardens are greener and Cultural Summer is celebrated, a local festival that commemorates Slovak culture and its countless treasures.
