Today we are going to have a lot of fun. Today, we go shopping, cafes, shows and much more. Today to Florida Street!
Florida Street begins on Rivadavia Avenue, near the Catedral subway station and next to the Plaza de Mayo. It ends at Plaza de San Martin, San Martin subway station. No matter where you decide to start, what is certain is that you have to walk the whole of it. It is little more than a kilometer, but what a kilometer!
It is the oldest pedestrian street in Buenos Aires. A large section of 10 blocks that was closed to traffic for the first time in 1911, becoming completely pedestrianized in 1971.
Long before, back in the late 18th century, they already realized that their privileged location -in the very heart of Buenos Aires – was going to make this street one of the main arteries of the city and they decided to pave it for the first time.
From then until now, Florida Street has always been the most commercial street in Buenos Aires. On a walk down this street you will find everything. All brands, all firms, luxury, “ready-to-wear”, all kinds of clothing, accessories, technology, crafts…. But also art, a lot of art.
Not only for the art galleries, the rest of the galleries, the commercial ones, many of them are authentic works of architectural art. Even if you don’t like shopping, visit Galerías Pacifico, in its monumental 19th century building; or the Boston Gallery and its impressive mural, or the Güemes Gallery, a skyscraper from 1915, will delight any lover of beautiful things.
The entire street is lined with imposing buildings, some of the most beautiful in the city. When you reach the intersection with Avenida el Presidente Roque Sánchez Peña, you will see four buildings, one on each corner, and four domes that will take your breath away. Just as stunned you will be at the junction with Juan Domingo Perón. Don’t stop looking up. As impressive is what the hundreds of shop windows offer as the buildings that house them.
When you look down, after observing that beautiful Art Deco building or that other one with a classic style, you will see how art continues to take over the streets. Musicians, dancers, actors and all kinds of shows adorn Florida Street every day, to complete a street in which nothing can be missing.
Florida Street will be your companion for a great day. Enjoy the architecture, buy everything you dream of, take something you had not even imagined, have a drink in one of its historic cafes or dance to the rhythm of tango … because it is very common to find couples dancing street tango in some section of the street.
In Florida Street, anything is possible, it is a street walked by everyone and of which no one gets tired. Have fun!
