If there is a monument that identifies and characterizes the city of Buenos Aires, that is its obelisk. This is one of its most iconic buildings, which has accompanied the people of Buenos Aires for more than a century. Are you visiting Buenos Aires and want to know more about the Obelisk? Here you will find out!
At the beginning of the 20th century, Buenos Aires grew at a rapid pace, and its old buildings gave way to modernity. Among the old buildings that were demolished, there was an old church, famous for being the place where the flag of the Republic of Argentina was raised for the first time.
In the space that this left, a new central square was created, which in the future would become the heart of the city, both for its location and for its famous obelisk.
This monument was made to commemorate the creation of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires. The project for its construction began in March 1936, and in May, just three months later, it was already finished.
The Obelisk was also made to join the new Plaza de la República with the also new Avenida 9 de Julio. At the time of its inauguration, the square and the avenue were selected to be the place where the 400 years of the founding of the Argentine capital would be commemorated.
As is often the case with new construction, the Obelisk was not very popular during its early days. In fact, it was quite criticized, an ordinance was even passed to tear down the monument, but it was never executed.
Over the years, this aversion to the Obelisk diminished, and the people of Buenos Aires began to appreciate this distinctive construction, unique in the whole country. Likewise, with the arrival of the great sports celebrations and the different political demonstrations, the Obelisk took on an even more special meaning, and became an indispensable part of the city’s landscape.
Today, the Obelisk continues to be a meeting place. There, almost all the victories of the different local soccer teams are celebrated, as well as those of the national team. In addition, protests for various social inconveniences are still held in the Plaza de la República, right at the foot of the Obelisk.
In the same way, tourism has made this fantastic monument a true must-see in Buenos Aires. So if you go for a walk through this unique South American capital, do not hesitate to visit its Obelisk.
Nearby is another of the must sees in Buenos Aires, it is the Colon Theater, which is recommended to take a guided tour.
Buenos Aires is a very vibrant and active city, especially around the Plaza de la República. Likewise, this is a very commercial area, so it has a large number of shops, restaurants, franchises and a lot of vehicular traffic.
This means that you can visit the Obelisk at any time of the year, however, one of the best times to visit it is during Christmas time, when the whole place is decorated and there is a wide variety of cultural offerings.
