Near one of the ports of Buenos Aires, is the Frigate Museum A.R.A, this is an old military frigate, which was used as a training ship for the young people of the Argentine navy. Today it is an important tourist spot, and a lasting memory of the first years of naval exploration of the country.
This type of ship stands out for being completely military in use, and in the case of the Frigate A.R.A, whose real name is A.R.A Presidente Sarmiento, its function was even more specific and important.
The frigate was commissioned by the then Argentine government, to a British shipyard. This request had a very good justification, and that is that although Argentina had naval ships, none were modern enough to prepare the young people who were entering the navy adequately.
So this was a renovation plan, similar to what the entire country was undergoing in the late 19th century.
In England, the construction of the Frigate A.R.A Presidente Sarmiento began on February 14, 1896, and ended on August 31, 1897. The ship would arrive in Argentina almost a year later, on June 24, 1898.
Once in Argentine maritime space, the Frigate A.R.A Presidente Sarmiento began its functions almost immediately. In time, this ship would travel more than a million nautical miles, and it approached an uncountable number of ports around the world.
These maritime feats were made possible by the design of the ship. Its structure was one of the most modern of the time, and due to its size, it could house a considerable size crew, who were in charge of the handling, care and maintenance of the frigate.
Similarly, the vessel had its own defense system, which included 2 machine guns, 3 torpedo tubes and 12 cannons of different types. However, all the missions of the frigate were in peace conditions, so its weapons were only used as model instructions for the most novice sailors.
Similarly, the frigate could be powered by sail or steam. At full power, it could reach speeds of 13 knots, which is quite fast for an old military training ship.
The long career of the frigate ended in 1961, later it was named a National Historic Monument, and became the well-known Museo Fragata A.R.A
For fans of Argentine history, navigation and the functions of the navy, the Frigate Museum A.R.A is a must see of Buenos Aires.
