The origin of Argentine empanadas

It is believed that this food comes from the ancient peoples of the Mediterranean and was gaining notoriety in the West thanks to the exchanges that took place with those who made long-distance pilgrimages.

The arrival of this food to the country was brought by Spanish immigrants, so that in 1810 it was already very common to see a great variety of empanada sellers in the area of the Río de la Plata.

Over time, empanadas became a popular dish throughout Latin America that can be found in many varieties depending on the region. In the case of Argentina, its preparation and filling varies according to the territory where it is found, such as the empanadas salteñas, cordobesas and fritas.

The different empanadas in Argentina

Currently there are many types of empanadas in Argentina. Even so, the most traditional ones are still the criollas. These empanadas are characterized by their filling with meat and green onion, although depending on the region they may include potatoes, raisins, egg and olives.

Other popular empanadas in the country are the tucumanas, filled with knife-cut meat, egg and green onion. Meanwhile, empanadas from Salta incorporate potato to the same filling, and those from Catamarca incorporate raisins.

The most common options in the city’s street stalls are those empanadas filled with ham and cheese, vegetables, chicken and humita, among others. In addition, the type of cooking may vary as some choose to bake them while others prefer them fried.

Empanada Festival in Buenos Aires

This food is very popular in the country and the favorite of many of its inhabitants, so it is not surprising that it has its own day of celebration. This festival is held in November and during that day cooks from the 23 provinces of Argentina and the City of Buenos Aires come together to compete for who prepares the best empanada in the country.

The Fiesta de la Empanada is held every year in one of the main streets of the city, which are filled with more than 30 gastronomic stalls offering a wide variety of empanadas and live music.

In order to participate in the event, there is a call for applications from cooks with professional experience. The selection of the contestants is in charge of a jury that also chooses the winner of the event.

At the moment of selecting the winner, the jurors take into account the preparation of the dough, the filling, the repulgue and the cooking of both traditional and vegetarian empanadas, the two types that the cooks must present. Once the contest is over, the winners are given a trophy as a prize.
