Every city has its central square, that place that is the heart of the city and where citizens can gather to walk, socialize and enjoy the city environment. In Montevideo, the Uruguayan capital, this space corresponds to the Independence Square, the most popular and busiest in the metropolis.
When Uruguay was still a small colony, its capital was a walled city, in the style of old European cities. After independence, Montevideo began to transform, leaving behind the walls that surrounded it.
