In the last decades, wax museums have gained a lot of fame around the world. One of the best known is Madame Tussauds, but this is not just one museum, but several. These are distributed in several places in Europe, North America, Asia and Oceania, being Amsterdam one of the best known.
The history of Madame Tussauds museums began with the birth of Marie Tussauds, which occurred on December 1, 1761. In his youth, Tussauds stood out for only one thing, his ability to sculpt human faces out of wax.
Tussauds, of French origin, managed to do such incredible work, that she was contacted by members of the French nobility and even the royal family, for her to create hyper-realistic statues of the most famous personalities of the time.
The talent of Taussauds was so extraordinary, that she became the art teacher of the sister of King Louis XVI. His relationship with Gallic royalty caused him various problems throughout his life, especially during the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars.
For this reason, the artist moved to England, where she exhibited her various wax works, first as a traveling attraction, and later as a permanent museum. Later, the Madame Tussauds Museum in London was created, and later, the one in Amsterdam.
This branch of the Tussauds Museum was the first to open its doors outside of England. The place was opened in 1970, and has undergone various renovations since then, including a move in 1991 and an expansion in 2012.
Like the first Tussauds Museum, the one in Amsterdam has a wide variety of wax pieces, which recreate various famous people in detail. Among its most outstanding statues are those of the well-known Dutch queen Wilhelmina, King Wilhem-Alexander and Máxima, the queen consort.
But that’s not all, in the Tussauds Museum we can also find practically exact replicas of such important figures as Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Mahatma Gandhi, Diana of Wales, Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama, Barack Obama and Donald Trump.
In the same way, the museum has a special space, dedicated to fictional characters, and there we can see representations of numerous superheroes and other protagonists of series, books and movies.
Of course, the stars of music and sports could not be missing either. If you go to Madame Tussauds, you will come face to face with celebrities like David Beckham, Lionel Messi, Madonna and Beyoncé.
This notorious wax museum is located in the most central area of Amsterdam, right in front of the busy Dam Square and next to the Royal Palace.
It is easy to get to the museum, if you go from Central Station, it is only a 10 minute walk to Dam Square and the Madame Tussauds building. Similarly, you can get to the museum by tram, car or bicycle.
Beyond its impressive wax attractions, one of the most remarkable features of Madame Tussauds is the view from its top floor. So if you are looking for the ideal place to photograph the center of Amsterdam, you will find it here.
