In Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, we can find a wide variety of cultural options, each with its own richness and splendor. However, the most famous of them all is the Rijksmuseum, which is one of the most remarkable museums in all of Europe.
Like many other museums around the world, the Rijksmuseum was born thanks to the initiative of a lover of art and culture. Its founder and first financier was Alexander Gogel, a well-known Dutch minister.
Gogel wanted the Netherlands to have its own national museum, which should resemble the Louvre and display works by various Dutch artists. Gogel’s initiative was successful, and in a short time the Rijksmuseum was created, whose original headquarters were located in the city of The Hague.
Later, the museum would be in Amsterdam, the capital and most important metropolis of the country.
At the end of the 19th century, the Rijksmuseum already had an extensive collection of paintings and other types of works of art. Today, this is one of the main tourist attractions in Amsterdam, and every year it receives thousands of visitors.
The artistic style that is most present in this museum is the Dutch Baroque. Currently, the Rijksmuseum has several galleries dedicated to this trend, this set of exhibitions is known as the Golden Age.
This is not only his most important collection, it is also his most famous. In it we can find works by different artists who had a great career and a lot of prestige, such as Frans Hals, Lucas van Leyden, Johannes Vermeer, Hendrick Avercamp, Pieter Claesz, Esaias van de Velde and Pieter Jansz Saenredam.
Although its repertoire of works of art, portraits, drawings and sketches is wonderfully extensive, the Rijksmuseum has much more to offer. In it there is an extraordinary library and a whole section related to the history of the Netherlands, and objects as fascinating as they are everyday are exhibited.
