A walk through the old town of Eger invites you to delve into its brilliant past. And the Dobó István square is no exception. Do you want to feel that you have traveled in time? Join us to discover the secrets of this fascinating square.
Surely you wonder what the name of the central square of the city is due to. And it is that István Dobó was a Hungarian soldier, known for being the successful defender of Eger. Dobó was a member of the Magyar nobility and fought against the Ottomans in 1552.
Dobó became commander of Eger Castle in 1549. He became famous for his successful defense of the castle during the siege of 1552.
In that siege, two thousand defenders resisted the attack of more than eight thousand Ottoman soldiers. As a reward, Dobó became the owner of the Transylvanian castles of Déva and Sgamosújvár.
However, when he was accused of betraying the king, Dobó spent several years imprisoned in the castle of Pozsony. Consequently, his health suffered and he passed away shortly after his release.
Dobó István square is a meeting point for both locals and visitors. It is a quiet, yet lively and cosmopolitan place, perfect to enjoy a day out.
In the same way, in the square you can find from people playing music to small vendors’ booths. By the way, the Christmas season is one of the best times to visit the square, which is full of lights and traditional markets.
In addition, there are numerous terraces where you can enjoy a glass of Egri Bikavér, the city’s wine.
Strolling through the Dobó István square, you will feel surrounded by history. Although not much remains of its Turkish past, the baroque buildings that surround the square are palpable examples of Eger’s second renaissance.
Built around 1700, they form an extraordinary elegant and refined architectural legacy. In addition, the statues of Zsigmond and Alajos Stróbl give the square an incomparable beauty. All this with the Eger River bordering it to the northeast.
Without a doubt, the building that stands out the most in the Dobó István square is the parish of San Antonio. This place, rebuilt after the passage of the Turks, offers a different image depending on the time of day.
Next to the parish you will find the Eger town hall, also of great beauty and which allows visits inside.
Other buildings of distinguished style are the Episcopal Palace and the Lyceum. The first saves 250 years of history of the archbishops of the city of Eger. While the Lyceum houses one of the most outstanding libraries in Hungary.
Although many choose to stay in the center of Eger for a few hours, it is advisable to get to know this Hungarian corner in depth. So, if you decide to spend a few days in this town, you can visit its many monuments and museums long enough.
Finally, remember that if you are going to walk around the city, you must wear the appropriate clothing. So put on your comfortable shoes and go Eger!
