How is the Elevator of Santa Justa

Why was the Santa Justa Elevator built?

As its name indicates, the  Santa Justa Elevator works to move passengers from one place to another. It is located in the Baixa district, and was designed to cover the 45 meters between this neighborhood and Largo do Carmo.

In the same way, this elevator is one of the constructions that best represents the Industrial Revolution. Originally, its engine ran on steam, and its structure was completely made of wrought iron.

This iron not only served as the basis for the structure, but was also a decorative implement. The first designs of the elevator can still be seen, made with iron and following a clear neo-Gothic style, similar to that used in the Eiffel Tower.

Curiously, in its beginnings, the Santa Justa Elevator was seen as one more part of the local public transport. However, time made it a rarity, which is why it is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in Lisbon.

Is the Santa Justa Elevator still in operation?

Luckily, this elevator is not only a relic from a bygone era, it is still operational. Its steam engine, which for years was a true technological breakthrough, was replaced by a modern, faster and more efficient one.

Similarly, the interior of the Santa Justa Elevator underwent various modifications to make it safer and more accessible. In addition, a beautiful terrace was added, from where visitors can enjoy the city skyline.

On this terrace there is a cafeteria, ideal if you want to eat something and rest before going back down to continue your route through Lisbon. However, many of its decorations and interior finishes remain the same as when it was inaugurated, so entering the Santa Justa Elevator is like taking a trip back to the beginning of the 20th century.

So if you were looking for an interesting and fun plan, remember to include the great Lisbon elevator on your list of must-sees. We assure you that you will be fascinated by the experience.

What else should I know before going up to the Santa Justa Elevator?

If you are already sure that you will visit Lisbon and go through the Santa Justa Elevator, there are a couple of things you should keep in mind. The first is that this lift is part of the public transport system in Portugal, so general admission can be purchased at subway stations.

Despite this, there is an exception, and that is that the ticket that gives access to both the elevator and the terrace, is sold at the ticket offices of the place, not in the subway.

Lastly, remember that the Santa Justa Elevator is a popular attraction, and lines of tourists are common. To avoid them, we advise arriving early, before the crowds gather.
