In addition to being one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, Lisbon perfectly combines the traditional and the modern. Without a doubt, a trip through the Portuguese capital will make anyone fall in love. Come discover it!
Lisbon has many buildings that make it a city full of history. One of the most important is the Castle of Saint George. From this fortification you get the best views of the city, thanks to its location on a hill.
Near that hill, there is also the Sé of Lisboa Cathedral, the most important and oldest church in the city. This Romanesque-style temple also has a chapel with 14th-century tombs, a cloister, and a Treasury Room.
Another interesting monument is the Belem Tower, which is located in front of the monastery, on the banks of the Tagus. The place is open to visit it and visit the different floors. Upon reaching the terrace you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Jeronimos Monastery.
The monastery, named a World Heritage Site, was inaugurated at the beginning of the 16th century to celebrate the return from India of the famous navigator Vasco de Gama. His remains lie in one of the tombs found in the church.
The city of Lisbon has many neighborhoods with different peculiarities. Among the most interesting, the Alfama neighborhood stands out. This old fishing district reflects with its steep and labyrinthine cobbled streets, the true essence of Lisbon.
While the commercial life of the city takes place in the Baixa neighborhood. This is the neighborhood with perpendicular street layout that runs between the two hills of the castle and the Alto neighborhood that make up the city in terms of urban planning.
What best characterizes Lisbon is the possibility of going up in elevators from the lower area of La Baixa to the higher areas of it. And one of the ideal places to contemplate these neighborhoods from above is the Santa Justa Elevator.
From there, you can see the Chiado neighborhood, one of the most elegant in the city. This neighborhood is home to trendy shops, cafes and restaurants. Once the walk through this area is finished, you can visit the remains of the old Do Carmo Convent.
In the urban area of Lisbon its squares with modern buildings stand out. But these spaces are also part of the history of the city. Like the Commerce Square, where until the earthquake of the 18th century the old Royal Palace was located.
Currently, it is the center of the city’s transport networks where the main tram and bus lines pass. In addition, it is ideal to enjoy the sunset since it is located on the banks of the Tagus.
On the other hand, Rossio Square is the liveliest place in Lisbon. There are the most famous cafes and restaurants in the city. The Rossio fountain stands out. And in its center is the monument to Don Pedro IV, the first emperor of independent Brazil.
Finally, the important buildings that are in the Rossio square, the Doña María II National Theater, the Rossio railway station and the Santo Domingo Church stand out.
