Home | Lisbon | What you can't miss | East Station
The Portuguese capital is a metropolis in constant movement, which always has something new to offer and never stops evolving. One of its greatest examples of modernist architecture is the East Station, a huge intermodal complex designed to be the most advanced transport terminal in the country.
In the late 1990s, Portugal was heading towards progress. Quickly, the Portuguese capital was transforming, showing its most modern facet.
In addition, there was a reason to speed up this process, since Lisbon had been chosen as the venue for a Universal Exhibition, so the city had to show its best version. To achieve this, the creation of a transport station was planned, which would be one of the largest in the region and would stand out for its innovation.
In this way, the construction of the East Station began, which should not only function as a railway stop, but also as a commercial space and a metro station. Fortunately, the plan was successful, and the station was opened in 1998, just in time for the exhibition.
Currently, this is one of the busiest connection and transfer points in Portugal. It stands out for its immense glass roof, which rests on thin metal bases, making it look like a lush forest.
Likewise, the East Station is famous for its T-shaped distribution, since the various railways that come and go from different areas of the region meet at the top of the structure. Similarly, on the lower floors, there are the shopping center and the subway stops.
It is believed that the East Station is so wide and spacious that, if necessary, it could house all the transportation of the Portuguese capital. In addition, the architectural value of this space is simply incalculable, since it mixes many modernist elements with other currents such as Gothic and naturalism.
Regarding its functionality, it is important to mention that the East Station is in constant activity, since both buses and railways and subways come and go frequently. This means that passengers are also an active part of the station, filling it with life and dynamism.
However, the busiest and most fun part of the East Station is still its shopping area, where it is possible to find all kinds of shops and branches, perfect for making some purchases while you are in transit.
Being a public space, although immense and impressive, the entrance to the East Station is free. In the same way, she keeps working throughout the year, so any time is a good time to go and meet her.
Keep in mind that, if you are just going as a tourist, we suggest visiting the shopping center and some of the platforms, so you can see up close the magnificent structure of steel, concrete, beams and glass that keeps the structure standing.
However, if you have the opportunity to travel around the city or to an area near Lisbon, don’t hesitate to board at East Station. Its transport service is impeccable, and it offers a wide variety of lines, routes and destinations so that you can make the most of your stay in Portugal.
