Portugal, like many other European nations, was a kingdom for many, many centuries. At the head of the country were several monarchs, but one of those who stands out the most is Queen María I.
This sovereign reigned for decades, and her mandate remains one of the longest in Portuguese history. She was a successful regent, although there was a problem, she could not have heirs.
Just as she was a woman of politics, Maria I was also highly religious, so she did not hesitate to offer a promise if she managed to have a male child. When his heir came to the world, the Portuguese queen kept her word and ordered the construction of the Basilica da Estela.
The construction of this great temple was a feat for its time, and the most prominent architects and engineers worked there. Unfortunately, when the Basilica da Estrela was inaugurated in 1790, the first-born son of Maria I had already died.
This basilica stands out for its baroque and neoclassical style. It also has two twin towers, which frame its main facade. Its exterior, while impressive, may seem a bit plain, as it is almost entirely white in color.
However, the true beauty of the Estrela Basilica is in its interior, since it is exquisitely decorated with the best marbles, which also have a peculiar yellow and pink color.
Similarly, its dome is the central point of the entire structure, as well as the highest part of the church. Its vault is adorned with fine frescoes, which are also present on the walls of the temple.
Today, the Basilica da Estrela has two organs, whose melody resonates in every corner of the structure. As a curiosity, it is important to highlight the fact that this basilica was the first to be consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and it was not only a pioneer in Portugal, but in the entire world.
Therefore, every tourist who is planning their vacations in Lisbon and does not want to miss any unmissable, has to point out the Basilica da Estrela in their itinerary.
Previously, we mentioned that the basilica is far from the city center, so if you go on foot, you can take lines 25 and 28 of the local tram, which will leave you very close to the temple.
Also, keep in mind that the entrance to the Basilica da Estrela is free. However, to be able to climb to the dome and appreciate the beautiful views it offers, you must purchase a ticket.
