On your trip to Budapest you cannot miss a walk through the city’s most emblematic tourist attractions and buildings. But it is also important to get carried away by the flavors of the typical dishes it has to offer. This is how you fully experience the Hungarian experience. Don’t miss it!
One of the biggest tourist attractions in Budapest is its Parliament, located on the banks of the Danube River. It is an immense building where the meetings of the National Assembly are held.
In addition to contemplating its neo-Gothic architecture from the outside, it is possible to access and take a guided tour to learn about its history.
Another of the most striking buildings in the city is the Basilica of San Esteban. This church has two towers that function as a bell tower, and a dome that you can climb to see the city in its entirety.
Continuing with places from where you can get incredible views, the Buda Castle is ideal for watching the sunset. The walk to there is also beautiful since you can go on foot or by funicular.
Finally, Budapest also has squares and parks to rest from the hustle and bustle of the city. One of the most visited is Varosliget Park, where you can have a picnic, walk along the paths or go ice skating in winter.
A few kilometers from the center is Memento Park, a kind of open-air museum with statues that used to decorate the city, and a large green space.
Knowing the Hungarian gastronomy it is possible to find numerous options of savory dishes. Among the most popular is goulash, a soup served with meat, potatoes and vegetables, and seasoned with paprika.
A food very similar to goulash is pörkölt. It is a meat stew accompanied by vegetables and paprika, cooked in a cauldron and served hot.
Another typical dish is halászlé, a fish soup with fresh water, onion, paprika, tomato and white wine.
Lastly, a snack-like food is langos. It is a fried bread that is eaten hot and can be seasoned with grated cheese, butter with garlic or tomato.
Continuing with desserts and sweet dishes, Budapest presents a wide variety of Hungarian delicacies. One of the most popular is the strudel, an apple-filled cake served with ice cream on the side.
A dessert of Jewish origin that is eaten a lot in the city is flodni. It is made with layers of dough, poppy, apple, walnuts and plum jam.
The Hungarians have their own version of crepes, and they are palacsinta. They are sweets that can be eaten as dessert or for breakfast, and their filling varies. But the most traditional are fruit jam, chocolate sauce, fresh cheese or dried fruit.
Finally, the Hungarian cake chosen by adults and children to eat at any time of the year is the dobo cake. This dessert has a sponge cake base and has chocolate cream interspersed throughout its layers. The top of the cake is covered with caramel.
